  • Belgrade, 11 December 2019

Improving civic participation and transparency, as well as improving anti-corruption policies at the local level are areas in which 15 local self-governments have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Swiss PRO Programme, supported by the Swiss Government in cooperation with the Government of Serbia and implemented by UNOPS in partnership with the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM).

The Memorandum of Cooperation refers to support through the implementation of support packages in 15 towns and municipalities within the "Enhancing Good Governance at the Local Level" project, which is implemented by the SCTM within the Swiss PRO Programme.

According to Priska Depnering, Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Belgrade, local self-governments will, among other things, have the opportunity to improve transparency in their work through citizen participation in creating local self-government budgets and through gender budgeting.

"We are talking about a methodology that refers to transparency in work, the fight against corruption and the participation of citizens in all of this." There are various types of assistance, from technical, through advisory, to improving skills and social inclusion. "I would like to thank all local self-governments for participating and for being interested in addressing these important reforms," she said.

Novi Pazar, Sombor, Arilje, Vlasotince, Vrnjačka Banja, Knjaževac, Kovin, Topola, Tutin and Priboj received support for improving citizen participation and transparency.

Užice, Kosjerić, Lapovo, Merošina and Požega received support for improving anti-corruption policies.
